Meet Our Pastor

Reverend Economos Father Andrew D Cadieux

Since 2019, Father Andrew has been the Pastor for the Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Mattituck.

History of Our Parish

Original Church being built in 1969

Original Mattituck Greek Church being built in 1969 located on Breakwater Road.

On October 11, 1969, under the leadership of Theofan Kyvernitis, a Cypriot immigrant/businessman, the groundbreaking ceremonies took place on Breakwater Road. Originally, the church was built in potato fields, which are now replaced by vegetable fields.

With Rev. John Malouris and Rev. Dr. John Poulos of St. Demetrios Church in Astoria, New York present for the ceremony; Mr. Theofan Kyvernitis donated the property from the land of former farmer/real estate broker Stanley Sledjeski.

Early Years In Mattituck

At the time, there were very few places Greek immigrants could go with comfort and familiarity . When the Transfiguration of Mattituck Church was built, Mattituck became the only community in walking distance, after Astoria’s churches for Greeks. The Greek community has and is flourishing because of the Southold government and merchants who are all familiar friends. For many of the Greek families that immigrated to the United States, there was no Greek village upon arrival. Mattituck became a home-away-from-home for so many Greek and Cypriot families with similar yet unique backgrounds.

Mattituck Greek Church Through The Years

Special Thank You

Special appreciation to the work of  the following persons: the late Mrs. Athena Papadopoulos, who created journal books for free and the late Cleo P. Tsounis who donated her services as church secretary for 22 years and the journal books where this information was retrieved.

A special thanks to Catherine Tsounis for publishing her original article, Memories of Transfiguration Church Mattituck on the 50th Anniversary in the Queens Gazette. Read more here. Through her detailed work, we are able to re-live our Parish through the years and share memories together.
